Lightning Network Explained for Bitcoin Casino Players

Eoin Fahy, BitcoinSpins editor By Eoin Fahy · Updated 7 October 2026

The Lightning Network is a second layer built on top of the Bitcoin network where payments are sent almost instantly and at a very low cost. Using the Lightning Network to make a payment is off-chain and doesn't need to wait for a block to be added to the Bitcoin network like a standard on-chain Bitcoin transaction. Two of the ten casinos we cover allow deposits to be made using the Lightning Network. The following information discusses the Lightning Network in further detail and tells you when it is best to use this method.

  • Secondsfor a Lightning payment to settle
  • 2 of 10casinos we cover that take it
  • 0.0001 BTCsmallest Lightning deposit at 7Bit
  • 1 hourdefault life of an invoice

The short answer

  • Lightning is Bitcoin. There is no separate coin. The same bitcoin moves over a faster layer.
  • Payments settle in seconds. They skip the ten-minute wait for a block.
  • You pay an invoice, not an address. It starts with "lnbc" and it expires, after one hour by default.
  • 7Bit and Betpanda take Lightning deposits. The other eight casinos we cover take standard Bitcoin only.
  • It suits small amounts. Plan on a standard Bitcoin payment for withdrawals and for larger sums.

What the Lightning Network is

Lightning Network explained side by side with a standard Bitcoin payment: Lightning settles in seconds, is paid to an invoice starting lnbc that lasts one hour by default, and suits small amounts
The same bitcoin, sent two ways.

Normal Bitcoin payments are written to a block and a new block is created approximately every 10 minutes. This means that sending a payment to move your bitcoin savings is not an issue, however, sending a small payment like a €10 top-up is not ideal and especially when the network is busy, the fees to send the payment can be very high and not worth it.

This is where the Lightning Network comes in. The idea of the Lightning Network is to have payments be transmitted and received off-chain and not have to be written to a block, ultimately making payments faster and cheaper. According to the Lightning Network's official website, payments are transmitted in milliseconds to seconds.

Even though the Lightning Network is a second layer, it doesn't actually move or change bitcoin. The Lightning Network relies on the main network to verify ownership of bitcoin.

How the Lightning Network works

  1. 1. Open

Two parties lock bitcoin in a channel

One ordinary Bitcoin transaction puts the funds under joint control. This step does wait for a block.

  2. 2. Pay

    They update the split

Each payment is a signed note saying who now owns how much. Nothing goes to the main network, so it is instant.

  3. 3. Route

    Payments hop between channels

You do not need a channel with the casino. A payment finds a path through other people's channels, like a parcel through depots.

  4. 4. Close

    The final split is settled

Either side can close the channel at any time. The last agreed balance is written to the main network.

Users don't see the inner workings of the Lightning Network. People see a balance and a Pay button. What is happening behind the scenes is managed by the app or the provider you connect to.

In step 3, the hops are not trusted with your money. Each can only pass the payment on or fail. If no hops can transmit the payment, the payment fails and the bitcoin remains in your wallet.

Is Lightning Bitcoin still Bitcoin?

What stays the same

The asset. One bitcoin on Lightning is one bitcoin, at the same price.

The finality. A payment that has gone through cannot be reversed.

So a casino credits a Lightning deposit as BTC.

What changes

How you pay. You scan an invoice made for one payment. You do not paste a reusable address.

The wallet. It has to support Lightning, and not every Bitcoin wallet does.

So a Lightning invoice and a Bitcoin address cannot be swapped for one another.

Invoices on the Lightning Network are typically displayed in satoshis. A satoshi is 0.00000001 bitcoin. At the time of writing, one bitcoin is worth approximately €76,568, which means 10,000 satoshis equals approximately €7.66.

How to pay a casino over the Lightning Network

  1. Choose Lightning in the cashierIt is listed beside standard Bitcoin, as "Bitcoin Lightning" or "Lightning Network".
  2. Enter the amountA Lightning invoice is made for a set amount, so the casino asks for it first.
  3. Scan or copy the invoiceIt is a QR code and a long string that starts with "lnbc".
  4. Pay from a Lightning walletYour wallet shows the amount and the fee. Confirm it.
  5. Check your balanceThe deposit should show within seconds.

Two main things trip people up. The first is time. An invoice is valid for one hour by default and a casino may set a shorter time limit. If you come back to an old tab, ask for a new invoice.

The second is method. A Lightning invoice can't be paid using a wallet that only supports on-chain Bitcoin. Sending to the wrong kind of destination is the most common way to lose a deposit, so always make sure to use the same method as the cashier in your wallet.

Which casinos take Lightning deposits

  • 2 of 10casinos we cover with Lightning deposits
  • 0.0001 BTC7Bit's Lightning minimum, about €7.66
  • €10Betpanda's minimum for any deposit
  • 8 of 10take standard Bitcoin only

7Bit shows both Bitcoin and Bitcoin Lightning on their deposit page for 0.0001 BTC each. Keep in mind that its other rules apply: Each deposit has to be played through three times to make a withdrawal and payouts are capped at €10,000 per week.

Lightning Network is a second Bitcoin option in Betpanda's cashier. Betpanda also holds no gaming licence, which is more important than how quickly a deposit lands.

Both Lightning casinos take deposits only. Cloudbet, Shuffle, BC.Game, Roobet, Metaspins, HellSpin, Vave and Slots Gallery take Bitcoin on the main network. Low deposit Bitcoin casinos compare the minimums at all 10.

How to cash out Bitcoin Lightning

Where the bitcoin isHow it comes outHow long
At a casinoA standard Bitcoin withdrawal to your own addressThe casino's approval, then about 10 minutes a confirmation
In a Lightning walletPay any Lightning invoice, or swap to a standard Bitcoin addressSeconds for an invoice. A swap waits for a block
Heading for your bankSend it to a regulated exchange or broker and sell for euroSet by that service

A deposit with Lightning does not mean a withdrawal with Lightning. Be prepared to have a standard Bitcoin address to withdraw with. What that takes is covered in Bitcoin withdrawal times.

To turn Bitcoin into euro use a service authorised in the EU. How to buy Bitcoin in Ireland shows how to check one.

Is the Lightning Network safe?

What works

  • Payments are enforced by Bitcoin's own rules
  • The hops in between cannot take a payment
  • A failed payment never leaves your wallet
  • Only small amounts need to sit in it

What to watch

  • A wallet company that holds your keys can freeze or lose the funds
  • A wallet where you hold the keys needs its backup kept safe
  • A completed payment cannot be reversed
  • Large payments can fail to find a route

The design of the network itself is pretty sound. The weak points are the same as anywhere in Crypto: Who holds the keys, and did you send to the right place?

Many Lightning wallets are run by a company that holds the Bitcoin for you. While this is simple to use, this is a balance with a company, and you are trusting them. In the EU, holding Crypto for customers is a regulated service under the MiCA rules, so this provider will do KYC on you.

When to use Lightning, and when to use standard Bitcoin

  • Lightning for small deposits. A €10 or €20 top-up lands in seconds and the fee stays small.
  • Lightning when the main network is busy. Block space gets dear when demand is high. Lightning fees do not follow it in the same way.
  • Standard Bitcoin for withdrawals. That is what the casinos we cover pay out with.
  • Standard Bitcoin for large amounts. The main network carries any sum. Lightning routes have limits.
A deposit that lands in two seconds is pleasant. A withdrawal that lands at all is the part that matters.

Lightning Network explained: FAQ

Is Bitcoin Lightning still Bitcoin?

Yes. Lightning moves real Bitcoin. There is no Lightning coin and no separate price. Amounts are shown in satoshis, and 100,000,000 satoshis make up one Bitcoin.

How does Bitcoin Lightning work?

With a single Bitcoin transaction, two parties can lock up some bitcoin in a shared channel. They can then transact with each other as many times as they want by updating ownership without the need for a block. Other parties on the network can pay each other by sending payments hopping across a series of connected channels.

How to cash out Bitcoin Lightning?

From a casino, expect a standard Bitcoin withdrawal to your address. With your own Lightning wallet, you can pay other invoices or swap your balance to a Bitcoin address which takes one block to process.

Is the Bitcoin Lightning Network safe?

Payments are secure because they are enforced by the rules of Bitcoin. The risks are around payments: using a wallet service to control your keys, losing a backup, or sending a payment to the wrong party. A Lightning payment is irreversible.

Which casinos accept Bitcoin Lightning?

Of the ten we cover, 7Bit and Betpanda take Lightning deposits and are confirmed for deposits only.

What is the minimum Lightning deposit at a casino?

7Bit sets its minimum at 0.0001 BTC (€7.66 at €76,568 per BTC) and Betpanda sets its minimum at €10.

Why did my Lightning payment fail?

The main causes of a failed payment are an invoice that has expired, an amount that is too large to find a route for, or not enough balance in a wallet on the other side of a channel. A failed payment doesn't decrease the balance of your wallet. To pay again, you need to ask the cashier for a new invoice.
